Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Database)

What you will do

• Design and implement high-performance Elixir and Phoenix backend systems, including Document Engine and Document Web Services API.
• Build efficient database-backed features through data modelling, lean queries, indexing, batching, and reduced database round trips.
• Profile query patterns, analyze query plans, and remove database bottlenecks in existing services.
• Optimize Document Engine for large document and annotation volumes across managed cloud and self-hosted PostgreSQL environments.
• Design and execute safe zero-downtime migrations and contribute to architecture, tools, services, reliability, and customer success.
• Use AI agents and automation to accelerate investigation, implementation, and repetitive engineering work.

Requirements

• Experience building backend services and distributed systems.
• Deep production experience with PostgreSQL, including data modelling, query optimization, indexing, transactions, and concurrency.
• Experience with large PostgreSQL tables, partitioning, replication, live migrations, and production incident troubleshooting.
• Experience improving database access patterns, including fixing N+1 queries and reducing application load through better data design.
• Familiarity with AWS, cloud environments, and containerized deployments.
• Strong coding skills, pragmatic engineering judgment, direct communication, and accountability for AI-assisted output.

Nice to have

• Kubernetes experience.
• Elixir experience is helpful but not required.
