Location: London, UK; hybrid schedule with office presence required 3 days per week

The Athletic is a sports media company with a global newsroom covering professional and college teams, including English Premier League clubs and major North American sports markets.

What you will do

• Manage a small team of reporters producing news, features, and enterprise journalism.
• Generate and plan story ideas, particularly around major soccer and sporting events.
• Identify and commission writers and collaborate with news and live teams.
• Copy-edit, structure, and publish stories through WordPress.
• Work with social and programming teams to maximize audience reach.
• Support coverage across soccer, global sports, tennis, F1, and North American sports.

Requirements

• 3+ years of experience in digital sports journalism.
• Advanced ability to generate engaging story ideas and develop them into broader packages.
• Advanced copy-editing and sub-editing skills, including story structure, style guidelines, and identifying problematic sentences.
• Ability to add context, preserve the writer's voice, ensure fairness, and strengthen story structure.
• High-end knowledge of football/soccer and other sports.
• Ability to work weekends, early mornings, and evenings when required by the sporting calendar.
