2027 Summer Intern, AI Engineer (AI/ML): Building and evaluating scalable machine learning solutions, including deep learning and large language models, across the full AI lifecycle with an accent on natural language processing, generative AI, data engineering, and production software. Focus on training and optimizing models, analyzing large semi-structured datasets, prototyping emerging methods, and deploying robust systems in collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams.
Location: Hybrid, minimum two days per week from the Reston, Virginia office. Candidates must be US citizens, reside in the United States, be authorized to work in the United States, and perform all work in the United States.
Salary: $32 per hour expected. The stated full-time employment pay range is $45,805–$77,869.

What you will do
- Support the end-to-end AI and machine learning lifecycle, including data acquisition, preprocessing, model development, training, optimization, deployment, monitoring, and evaluation.
- Design and train deep learning, large-scale, natural language processing, computer vision, and generative AI models.
- Analyze large semi-structured datasets and perform exploratory analysis and feature engineering to improve model performance.
- Develop production-ready software in Python, C++, Java, R, or JavaScript using frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, and Scikit-learn.
- Research and prototype emerging methods including explainable AI, federated learning, and multimodal models.
- Collaborate with product managers, data engineers, data scientists, and software engineers to define requirements and deliver AI solutions.
Requirements
- Completed bachelor's degree in computer science, machine learning, AI engineering, data science, or a related technical field.
- At least 9 completed graduate-level credit hours in a related technical field.
- US citizenship, US residence, US work authorization, and the ability to perform all work in the United States are required.
- Knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language, with a strong preference for Python.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Scikit-learn.
- Experience working with large-scale datasets and data preprocessing.
- Experience with Git and other version control systems.
