Principal Engineering Manager, Security Engineering (AI)

Location: Mountain View, New York, or Redmond, United States

Salary: USD $142,800–$274,800 per year across the U.S.; USD $188,000–$304,200 per year in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City metropolitan area.

What you will do

• Build, hire, coach, and lead a security engineering team spanning product security, cloud and platform security, identity, detection and response, and security tooling.
• Translate security strategy, threat intelligence, incidents, and business priorities into an executable engineering roadmap with clear ownership, milestones, dependencies, and measures.
• Lead architecture reviews, threat modeling, code and telemetry analysis, incident response, and practical security engineering decisions.
• Protect AI research, model training, evaluation, deployment, and operations through secure controls for identities, secrets, data, workloads, software supply chains, and infrastructure.
• Partner with Microsoft AI, research, platform, infrastructure, privacy, legal, and central security teams to improve secure defaults and reusable security capabilities.
• Establish production ownership, observability, incident readiness, and measurable risk reduction for critical security capabilities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field with 6+ years of technical experience, or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years working with large-scale cloud or distributed systems and 3+ years of people management or team leadership.
• Experience directly managing engineers, including hiring, performance management, feedback, and career development.
• Experience shaping engineering organizations, technical roadmaps, security programs, and cross-functional execution.
• Recent hands-on experience with code, architecture, telemetry, production systems, or complex incidents.
• Experience securing AI or machine-learning systems, cloud and platform infrastructure, identity systems, sensitive data, or security platforms.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree and 8+ years of technical experience, or bachelor’s degree and 12+ years of technical experience.
• Experience leading security operations or threat and vulnerability management.
• Experience scaling security engineering in a startup, research, or rapidly growing environment.
• Experience managing senior, staff, principal, or engineering managers and technical leads.
