News Designer (Digital Editorial Storytelling)

Location: Washington, D.C., United States; on-site five days a week. Requires some night and weekend work.

Salary: $85,100–$127,700 per year.

What you will do

• Collaborate with reporters, editors, photographers, graphics journalists, illustrators and developers to create digital storytelling experiences.
• Identify stories that need enhanced visual presentation and develop appropriate design approaches.
• Create content-driven designs, illustrations and visual packages for desktop, mobile, newsletters, social platforms and other digital surfaces.
• Guide visual storytelling from concept through publication, incorporating feedback and maintaining high craft standards.
• Partner on interactive and custom storytelling projects and contribute visual solutions for breaking and major news.
• Use art direction, illustration, animation and other techniques while reviewing work for consistency, accessibility and accuracy.

Requirements

• Strong portfolio demonstrating visual design, creative thinking, initiative and curiosity.
• Experience designing digital editorial experiences, interactive applications or content-rich products.
• Sophisticated understanding of typography, composition, color, visual hierarchy and information design.
• Strong editorial judgment, communication and cross-disciplinary collaboration skills.
• Ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects and deliver refined work under deadline pressure.
• Fluency with Figma, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, with a commitment to accessibility, accuracy and ethical use of AI-assisted design tools.

Nice to have

• Experience with art direction, animation, illustration, original artwork or maintaining a cohesive visual identity.
• Experience with HTML, CSS or JavaScript.
• Familiarity with React, Svelte, Angular or Vue.
