What you will do

  • Fulfil statutory duties as Named Training and Competency Officer and Named Information Officer under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
  • Manage competence assessments, continuing professional development, and auditable records for personal licence holders and animal care staff.
  • Lead 3Rs implementation and the Experimental Support Group, embedding Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement across research projects.
  • Organise and deliver accredited training in in vivo experimental techniques and regulatory licensing.
  • Provide expert guidance to the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body on project reviews, procedural standards, and licence compliance.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and associated statutory responsibilities.
  • Substantial practical experience in in vivo biomedical research techniques and animal care standards.
  • Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and practical application of the 3Rs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to train, assess, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working collaboratively with statutory Named Persons and technical specialists.
  • Degree in a relevant life sciences discipline or equivalent professional experience.

Nice to have

  • PhD or equivalent research qualification in a biological or life science field.
  • Previous experience as a statutory Named Person or AWERB member.
  • Experience overseeing digital training registers and research support pipelines.
