R&D Scientist - Synthetic Polymer Chemist

Location: Ashby, United Kingdom; onsite work at the Ashby site.

Salary: starting from £48,770 per annum, plus a performance-related bonus scheme.

What you will do

• Design, synthesise, and develop polymer systems for coatings, potting compounds, encapsulants, and thermal interface materials.
• Formulate and optimise polyurethane, UV-curable, and other thermoset technologies for customer and application requirements.
• Lead laboratory development projects from concept through scale-up, pilot trials, process validation, and commercialisation.
• Develop resin chemistries and formulations with targeted adhesion, flexibility, hardness, chemical resistance, and environmental durability.
• Investigate formulation, processing, and manufacturing issues using experimental design, testing, root cause analysis, and scientific problem-solving.
• Collaborate with application engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and customers while preparing technical reports and development documentation.

Requirements

• Degree in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Organic Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline; PhD, MSc, or BSc accepted.
• Industrial experience in synthetic polymer development and formulation, including strong polyurethane chemistry expertise.
• Hands-on experience with UV-curable materials, including acrylate and/or cationic systems.
• Experience with coatings, potting compounds, encapsulants, adhesives, sealants, thermal interface materials, or related polymer technologies.
• Knowledge of polymer synthesis, curing mechanisms, material characterisation, scale-up, manufacturing, and technical troubleshooting.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, communicate technical concepts clearly, collaborate cross-functionally, and support junior scientists and technicians.

Nice to have

• Experience with Design of Experiments and statistical analysis tools.
• Knowledge of electronic materials, electronics protection, thermal management, and chemical-product regulatory requirements.
• Experience contributing to Lean and continuous improvement initiatives.
