Senior Software Engineer, Application Gateway (Envoy/Kubernetes)

Location: San Mateo, California, United States. Office-based roles require onsite presence Tuesday through Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $196,750–$243,290 USD annual base pay, plus potential equity compensation and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate an Envoy-based application gateway fleet handling billions of daily requests.
• Own L7 routing, authentication, rate limiting, traffic policies, capacity planning, and reliability improvements.
• Develop infrastructure for cloud bursting between on-premises data centers and cloud environments.
• Partner with networking and service teams to provide consistent traffic management across clusters and regions.
• Debug complex Envoy, xDS control plane, TLS termination, networking, and load-balancing issues.
• Mentor engineers and promote best practices in testing, deployment, and reliability engineering.

Requirements

• 3+ years of professional experience with distributed systems.
• Strong networking expertise, including Envoy, Kubernetes, L7 networking, routing, TLS, authentication, authorization, rate limiting, and load balancing.
• Production experience running Kubernetes and familiarity with the Kubernetes networking model.
• Experience with Envoy internals, xDS APIs, control plane architectures, and systems spanning multiple clusters and regions.
• Fluency in Go, C/C++, or Rust, plus experience with on-call rotations and reliability-focused infrastructure.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States; future H-1B sponsorship may not be supported.
