Senior Staff Data Engineer (Azure)

Location: Chicago, IL, United States; full-time onsite role.

Salary: $142,530–$178,110 per year.

What you will do

• Design and build major data systems, pipelines, frameworks, semantic models, and reusable data components.
• Deliver complex data engineering work across ingestion, transformation, storage, analytics, and data delivery on Azure.
• Build production-grade infrastructure supporting dashboards, self-service analytics, forecasting, and machine-learning model training and serving.
• Define and promote standards for code quality, performance, scalability, observability, governance, testing, and architecture.
• Diagnose difficult BI and data workload performance, reliability, and scalability issues across Power BI, Synapse, and Fabric.
• Mentor engineers, conduct design reviews, advise leadership on architecture and tradeoffs, and translate business problems into scalable solutions.

Requirements

• Extensive hands-on experience as a senior or staff-level data engineer delivering production data systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse Analytics, Power BI, semantic modeling, and broader Azure data and analytics services.
• Strong command of data engineering architecture, modern analytics platforms, dimensional and semantic modeling, and scalable, fault-tolerant pipelines.
• Expert proficiency in Python and SQL, with strong software engineering fundamentals including testing, version control, CI/CD, and modular design.
• Understanding of data-science workflows sufficient to build infrastructure for model training and serving.
• Ability to solve ambiguous technical problems, influence engineering practices, mentor others, and communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-visibility environment with multiple priorities and stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience building enterprise data platforms for operations, commercial functions, and product-driven organizations.
• Experience combining BI modernization with analytics and ML platform enablement.
• Familiarity with cloud-native practices, infrastructure-as-code, and secure, scalable data environments.
• Experience contributing to platform-wide standards and reference architectures across multiple teams.
• Experience building pipelines for RAG, LLM, or other modern AI workloads.
