Director, Toxicology (Chemical Safety)

Salary: $170,200–$234,100 base salary per year

What you will do

• Develop and execute enterprise strategies, standards, policies, risk criteria, and governance for chemical safety and food toxicology.
• Provide senior technical authority on chemical hazard identification, toxicological risk assessment, exposure assessment, ingredient safety, packaging, and food contact materials.
• Approve ingredients and food contact materials and guide analytical testing strategies, laboratory methods, data interpretation, and laboratory performance.
• Lead technical responses to chemical safety incidents, supplier non-conformances, recalls, regulatory requests, and customer or consumer escalations.
• Monitor scientific, regulatory, consumer, and legislative developments and create risk mitigation plans, executive recommendations, dashboards, and reporting.
• Build internal capability through training and represent the organization in scientific associations, technical panels, and regulatory forums.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree.
• 15+ years of progressive experience in food, beverage, consumer packaged goods, ingredients, packaging, or related technical environments.
• Leadership experience in chemical safety, food toxicology, ingredient risk assessment, analytical chemistry, food contact materials, contaminants, or related food safety disciplines.
• Experience with technical governance, enterprise standards, cross-functional risk decisions, incident response, regulatory or customer-facing technical matters, and external laboratory strategies.
• Experience working with FDA, USDA, EPA, state agencies, international regulators, or customer regulatory and food safety teams.
• Knowledge of laboratory procedures and analytical equipment including GC/MS, LC/QTOF, and ICPMS, plus experience managing and developing technical teams.

Nice to have

• Ph.D. in toxicology, food toxicology, food science, chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, or a related discipline.
• Board certification by the American Board of Toxicology or an equivalent specialized toxicology credential.
• Certifications or training in HACCP, PCQI, Lead Auditor, ASQ, Lean Six Sigma, risk assessment, or regulatory science.
• Expertise in food-relevant chemical hazards, regulatory frameworks, analytical chemistry methods, laboratory operations, exposure calculations, toxicological thresholds, and testing-result interpretation.
• Strong program management, crisis response, communication, influencing, and senior stakeholder engagement skills.
