Senior Analytical Chemist (Biotech)

Location: Hayward, California, United States. The role is hybrid initially, with 3 days in the office and 2 days remotely, and is expected to transition to full-time onsite work at the Hayward facility in early 2027.

Salary: $130,000–$154,000 per year.

What you will do

• Launch and develop the analytical laboratory, including capability assessments, method portfolios, SOPs, procurement, vendor networks, and capacity planning.
• Lead the development, qualification, optimization, validation, and transfer of analytical methods for client technologies and pilot-plant campaigns.
• Oversee analytical testing for reference materials, starting materials, intermediates, stability studies, and product characterization.
• Establish sample handling, labeling, storage, tracking, data management, reporting, and traceability practices.
• Maintain instrumentation reliability and coordinate external analytical testing and CRO services when needed.
• Collaborate with operations, project leads, clients, and laboratory personnel while supporting safety and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• BS or MS in analytical chemistry or a related field with 10+ years of industry experience, or a PhD with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Experience in analytical development, method validation, and method transfer in industrial biotechnology, biopharma, or a pilot-scale environment.
• Hands-on expertise with HPLC, UHPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, SEC, RP, and IEX chromatography.
• Knowledge of chemical hygiene, analytical waste handling, hazardous standards and reagents, compressed gases, and solvents.
• Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external partners, including consultants and technical vendors.
• Successful completion of a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting microbiology or lab-scale fermentation operations.
• Experience building analytical capabilities for a new laboratory or pilot-plant site.
