TL;DR
Trade Compliance Specialist (U.S. Import Compliance/SAP): Managing and optimizing U.S. import compliance systems, tariff classifications, customs audits, and broker performance for a global bicycle-component manufacturer with an accent on HTS/ECCN classification, duty analysis, and regulatory governance. Focus on maintaining audit-ready trade data, coordinating customs brokers and suppliers, and solving cross-jurisdiction classification challenges across North America, Germany, the EU, Australia, and Canada.

Location: Chicago, Illinois, United States

Salary: Starting at $80,000 per year, with up to approximately 25% higher compensation based on experience and skills.

What you will do

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for U.S. Customs matters and the primary contact for North American Customs activities.
  • Manage U.S. import compliance, including duty analysis, regulatory updates, customs audits, and document retention.
  • Maintain HTS codes, tariff classifications, and duty rates in SAP and lead classification projects across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Oversee U.S. Customs brokers, suppliers, and vendors, including performance management, SOP updates, and compliance with CBP requirements.
  • Analyze trade actions such as Sections 232 and 301 and provide reporting aligned with business priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, global teams, external vendors, and distribution stakeholders on process improvements and compliance initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5–6 years of U.S. import compliance experience in an importer environment.
  • Strong tariff classification expertise across diverse commodities and experience producing defensible, audit-ready support.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, the CBP ACE Portal, CROSS, FDA, APHIS, and U.S. HTS resources.
  • Experience with end-to-end process management, vendor management, continuous improvement, research, audits, and advising business partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Nice to have

  • U.S. Customs Broker License, Certified Customs Specialist, or similar credential.
  • Knowledge of Canadian border processes, customs valuation, or free trade agreement origin determination.
  • Knowledge of U.S. export compliance, EEI filing, and ECCN classification.
  • Deep understanding of U.S. Customs law and regulatory frameworks.
