Perception Engineer, Robot Safety

What you will do

• Build production perception and monitoring systems using lidar and cameras for person detection, tracking, and safety monitoring.
• Own the safety-critical software path from sensor readings to a stopped robot, including tests, failure modes, and upstream fault handling.
• Design and review systems that determine whether a robot is safe to move.
• Test systems with replayed field data, constructed scenarios, and hardware faults, then implement fixes.
• Collaborate across product teams on features that affect robot safety.
• Contribute to safety strategy, risk evidence, and robot deployability as the fleet grows.

Requirements

• Experience shipping perception or monitoring software on robots or vehicles in production.
• Experience with lidar or camera pipelines, detection, tracking, or sensor fusion.
• Experience owning code where software failures could injure someone.
• Strong software engineering skills in Python and C++ or similar languages, including real-time constraints and verifiable code.
• Knowledge of controls concepts such as stopping distances, latency budgets, and converting perception decisions into motion commands.
• Ability to work on-site in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Nice to have

• Exposure to robot or machinery safety standards such as ISO 10218, ISO 13849, or ANSI/RIA R15.06.
• Experience with safety-rated sensors or detector safety validation.
• Experience in warehouses, manufacturing, or environments where robots and people share space.
• Experience with simulation and replay tooling for testing perception at scale.
