TL;DR
Staff Computational Materials Scientist (Fusion Energy/Computational Materials Science): Developing physics-based models, synthetic data, and first-principles simulations for materials used in fusion devices with an accent on extreme environments, process-structure-properties relationships, and uncertainty quantification. Focus on building multiscale computational workflows, validating predictive models against experimental data, and designing materials experiments for radiation, corrosion, stress, magnetic fields, and high temperatures.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site

Company

hirify.global Systems develops materials and technologies supporting SPARC, a net-energy tokamak, and the ARC fusion power plant.

What you will do

  • Build computational toolsets, workflows, and methods to predict material properties in extreme temperature, radiation, and magnetic-field environments with uncertainty bounds.
  • Identify chemical and microstructural features affecting material performance and quantify process-structure-properties-performance relationships.
  • Design and support experiments involving corrosion, stress, irradiation, magnetic and electric fields, and high temperature.
  • Develop material design-curve methodologies for tokamak applications, including fatigue, dielectric breakdown, and radiation effects.
  • Benchmark material-property variability, identify knowledge gaps, and use simulations to improve manufacturing and process understanding.
  • Create workflows for capturing, storing, visualizing, and analyzing materials data; support materials standards and technical specifications.

Requirements

  • Degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, Physical Chemistry, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of experimental or computational materials science experience.
  • Experience with computational materials science and ICME tools, multiscale simulation, predictive modeling, and model validation using experimental data or physical bounds.
  • Knowledge of atomistic modeling, molecular dynamics, density functional theory, Monte Carlo, phase-field, crystal-plasticity, dislocation-dynamics, computational thermodynamics, and finite-element methods.
  • Experience with scientific computing, numerical algorithms, high-performance computing, distributed processing, GPU acceleration, and advanced statistical methods.
  • Ability to work on-site in Devens, Massachusetts, comply with U.S. export control laws, and work safely around industrial hazards.

Nice to have

  • Experience presenting complex quantitative data in a clear and intuitive format.
  • Experience making decisions in fast-paced engineering environments and completing under-defined problems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with technical teams.
  • Experience working in flexible, service-oriented engineering teams.

Culture & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • Company-wide holidays, flexible vacation days, sick days, and parental leave.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching and professional growth opportunities.
  • Occasional nights, weekends, on-call work, and travel of less than 10% may be required.
  • Work includes safety considerations involving heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics.
