Staff Software Engineer (Core OS, Vehicle Compute)

Location: Hybrid; report to Lynnwood, Washington or Mountain View, California at least 3 times per week. Relocation benefits are available for eligible candidates.

Salary: $160,200–$330,400 per year, with additional bonus potential.

What you will do

• Define and implement hypervisor and virtual-machine capabilities, including CPU and memory partitioning, device passthrough, and virtio device models.
• Design communication between virtual machines using shared memory, message passing, and virtualized I/O.
• Enable embedded Linux, Yocto-based distributions, Android, and QNX guests with consistent platform services and lifecycle controls.
• Develop boot and secure-boot chains, resource governance, health monitoring, watchdogs, fault recovery, and container-runtime capabilities.
• Profile and debug performance across guest operating systems, hypervisors, firmware, hardware, and silicon.
• Improve CI/CD, hardware-in-the-loop automation, validation, code review, and cross-team engineering practices while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of professional experience in embedded, systems, or kernel-level software development, including production software for automotive or similarly complex embedded systems.
• Deep operating-system software expertise on Arm-based SoCs, including experience with hypervisors, real-time operating systems, Linux kernel subsystems, bootloaders, secure boot, or deterministic scheduling.
• Commercial embedded-systems experience with Yocto or a comparable build system, plus strong performance optimization and cross-layer debugging skills.
• Strong proficiency in C and C++, with practical Python and shell scripting experience; familiarity with Git, GitHub, CI/CD, automated testing, and release-quality engineering.
• Technical leadership experience through architecture, mentoring, design reviews, code reviews, and cross-team execution.

Nice to have

• Experience with Gunyah, QNX Hypervisor, Xen, or KVM/Arm and virtio device-model development.
• Experience with QNX SDP, AOSP, Android Automotive, or Yocto as guest environments on virtualized platforms.
• Automotive functional-safety or cybersecurity experience, including ISO 26262, ASIL, or ISO/SAE 21434.
• Experience with OCI runtimes, Podman, systemd-based isolation, trusted execution environments, secure-boot key management, or Rust.
• Experience with Linux tracing and debugging tools such as GDB, perf, ftrace, strace, or hypervisor-level tracing.
