Lab Design Project Engineer (Biotech)

Location: Thousand Oaks, California, United States; the role requires travel to project sites and organizational locations.

Salary: $140,334.15–$189,863.85 annually

What you will do

• Lead laboratory planning, design standards, workflows, space programs, equipment requirements, and functional layouts.
• Review concepts, layouts, drawings, specifications, and equipment plans for functionality, safety, constructability, and compliance.
• Lead technical aspects of capital projects from feasibility and programming through design, construction, commissioning, qualification, and occupancy.
• Coordinate with Engineering, EHS, Facilities, Quality, Operations, consultants, insurers, and construction teams to resolve technical issues.
• Evaluate laboratory utilities, ventilation, containment, automation, waste handling, security, emergency response, and supporting infrastructure.
• Provide technical mentoring, identify design risks, support commissioning and turnover, and improve laboratory standards using industry practices and emerging technologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, laboratory science, facilities management, or a related technical discipline, with significant relevant experience.
• Equivalent experience may include a doctorate with 2 years, master’s degree with 4 years, bachelor’s degree with 6 years, associate’s degree with 10 years, or high school diploma/GED with 12 years of engineering or laboratory science experience.
• Knowledge of laboratory planning, space programming, workflow design, equipment integration, utility requirements, building codes, fire and life-safety requirements, EHS expectations, and laboratory standards.
• Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and design documents.
• Strong project execution, problem-solving, communication, stakeholder-management, technical-writing, and multidisciplinary decision-making skills.
• Ability and willingness to travel as required for site assessments, project meetings, design reviews, construction activities, commissioning, and stakeholder engagement.

Nice to have

• Advanced degree or professional certification in engineering, architecture, laboratory planning, safety, or a related field.
• Experience with regulated pharmaceutical, biotechnology, clinical, research, manufacturing, or quality-control laboratories.
• Familiarity with GMP, GLP, biosafety, chemical hygiene, commissioning, and qualification practices.
• Experience with laboratory ventilation systems, fume hoods, biosafety cabinets, cleanrooms, containment systems, and specialized utilities.
• Professional credentials such as PE, RA, EIT, LEED AP, or laboratory-planning certification.
