Software Engineer, Internal Agent (AI)

Salary: $208,000–$312,000 annual base pay; compensation may vary outside San Francisco and may include equity, benefits, and bonus eligibility.

What you will do

• Design and build V as an agentic interface for answering questions, analyzing data, and executing complex workflows across Vercel.
• Develop agent architecture for intent understanding, planning, skill and tool selection, failure recovery, and reliable long-running task execution.
• Build natural-language and interactive experiences across Slack, web, and other product surfaces.
• Create evaluation, observability, and feedback systems to measure accuracy, usefulness, efficiency, and trustworthiness.
• Establish reusable primitives that allow teams to add capabilities without fragmented agents or inconsistent experiences.
• Turn the experience of operating Vercel through an agent into infrastructure and ideas for future customer products.

Requirements

• 7+ years of full-time software engineering experience.
• Strong TypeScript proficiency.
• Experience working across conversational interfaces, interactive data experiences, APIs, queues, databases, permissions, and production infrastructure.
• Understanding of AI interaction quality, including context selection, tool use, memory, latency, generated interfaces, uncertainty, progress communication, and escalation.
• Openness and adaptability when learning unfamiliar technologies, domains, and responsibilities.

Nice to have

• Experience using or building agent harnesses such as OpenClaw, Hermes, or Pi.
