Senior Power Systems Engineer (Spacecraft)

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; onsite. Travel of up to 10% may be required for launch campaigns, with occasional evening or weekend work during critical mission milestones. The role involves access to U.S.-controlled export information; the hired candidate must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing.

Salary: $112,340–$195,552 USD per year.

What you will do

• Own satellite power-system architecture, interfaces, requirements, configuration, and end-to-end verification and validation.
• Define power modes and budgets, and build energy-balance models covering generation, storage, orbital illumination, eclipses, margins, and off-nominal conditions.
• Decompose system requirements into circuit- and function-level requirements and define test setups, instrumentation, acceptance criteria, and data reviews.
• Drive power-related design decisions across mechanical, thermal, propulsion, GNC, and flight software systems.
• Lead failure-mode analyses, fault responses, autonomous behaviors, vehicle integration, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
• Maintain technical documentation and modular platform power-system designs across programs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or another engineering discipline.
• 5+ years of professional or project experience designing spacecraft electrical systems and power systems from initial requirements.
• Experience with high-voltage power systems above 100 V.
• Experience across space-system lifecycle development, including requirements, design, integration, qualification, verification, validation, and operation.
• Must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing under U.S. export-control requirements.
• Ability to balance multiple projects, adapt to changing priorities, and support critical mission milestones outside standard hours.

Nice to have

• Experience with lithium-ion batteries, solar arrays, solar array drive assemblies, peak power tracking, regulation, and power distribution units.
• Energy-balance and power-budget modeling with Python, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent.
• Experience with electrical schematics, electronics manufacturing, test equipment, and environmental testing such as vibration, shock, thermal, burn-in, and TVAC.
• Experience with Ethernet, CAN, SPI, I/O, RS232, RS422, and RS485 buses.
• Strong technical communication, independent judgment, documentation discipline, and a rigorous validation mindset.
