Research Scientist (AI)

Location: In-person in San Francisco, United States

Salary: $250,000–$450,000 base salary per year, plus equity and performance-based bonus opportunities.

What you will do

• Design datasets, evaluations, and reinforcement learning environments for frontier vision-language, multimodal, robotics, and coding models.
• Run structured failure analyses on partner laboratories' models using real-world task distributions.
• Translate model gaps into remediation specifications that define the data needed to close each gap.
• Lead the research behind new benchmarks, including extensions of RF100-VL.
• Validate data quality through fine-tuning, ablation studies, and empirical measurement.
• Contribute to open models such as RF-DETR and collaborate directly with research scientists at frontier laboratories.

Requirements

• PhD or equivalent research experience in computer vision, multimodal learning, machine learning, or a related field.
• Track record of published work or shipped research.
• Hands-on experience with post-training, including fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, evaluation design, or data curation for large models.
• Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to write code for experiments that can be productionized.
• Clear written communication for explaining model failure modes to researchers and data specifications to annotators.
• Ability to work in person in San Francisco.

Nice to have

• Experience at a frontier laboratory or as a data or evaluation partner to one.
• Experience with vision-language models, robotics learning, or agentic coding evaluations.
