Senior Active Defense Engineer (AI)

Location: Reston, Virginia, USA; hybrid work with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or in the field

Salary: $159,600–$239,400 USD annual base salary for the primary location; additional US locations list a $144,400–$258,000 USD annual base salary range.

What you will do

• Research internal and external cybersecurity data to assess threats and inform security teams.
• Execute threat-hunting activities, red-team engagements, and offensive security exercises.
• Discover vulnerabilities, bypass security controls, and evaluate defensive coverage.
• Perform gap analysis and develop or refine detection and alerting logic.
• Build adaptive and AI-assisted detection and response capabilities.
• Collaborate with security and business teams to scale cyber defense analysis and automation.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in incident response, intelligence analysis, vulnerability assessment, security engineering, or security operations.
• Experience researching cybersecurity threats and creating security solutions.
• Experience using AI-based discovery and exploit-creation tools to emulate adversary capabilities.
• Programming experience with Python, Java, Kotlin, Scala, or JavaScript.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to present technical information to non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or field.

Nice to have

• Experience responding to cybersecurity incidents and mitigating threats.
• Experience with red-team engagements and bypassing security controls.
• Experience reverse engineering malware, suspicious code, and vulnerabilities.
• Experience developing agents, automation, or workflow orchestration for detection and response.
• Interest in security intelligence, data science, or machine learning.
