Backend Engineer (Ruby)

Location: Hybrid role based in Lisbon, Portugal, with a minimum of two days per week at the Lisbon Hub. Candidates must already be based in Portugal. Visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and improve scalable microservices and product features.
• Own the quality, resilience, and maintainability of services throughout their lifecycle.
• Build customer-facing innovations across demand, supply, or fulfilment, including search, discovery, bidding, logistics, payments, and support.
• Collaborate with product designers, product owners, and frontend, backend, and mobile engineers.
• Improve engineering processes, document best practices, fix bugs, and refactor the codebase.
• Experiment with new technologies and share knowledge during Technical Week.

Requirements

• 7+ years of software development experience with strong object-oriented programming foundations.
• 3+ years of experience building customer-facing products in e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS.
• Experience designing, implementing, and deploying backend services focused on high availability, low latency, and consistency.
• Good understanding of API design, SQL, and relational databases.
• Excellent English communication skills and the ability to document work, share ideas, and raise concerns.
• Already based in Portugal and able to work from the Lisbon Hub at least two days per week.

Nice to have

• Previous Ruby experience is helpful but not essential.
• Experience with e-commerce, fintech, or SaaS products.
