Senior Technical Manager (Pharmaceutical Manufacturing)

Location: Rockville, Maryland, United States

Base salary: USD $126,250–$176,509 annually; target annual bonus varies by role level.

What you will do

• Lead technical workstreams for supply chain assessments and laboratory-based advanced manufacturing projects.
• Plan and coordinate route assessment, process development, scale-up, troubleshooting, purification, characterization, and technology evaluation.
• Apply process chemistry, API development, CMC, and advanced manufacturing expertise to project challenges.
• Assess API and key starting material manufacturing routes, suppliers, technologies, cost drivers, and supply vulnerabilities.
• Prepare technical plans, protocols, reports, briefing materials, and decision-support deliverables.
• Coordinate matrixed contributors, track milestones and risks, and support timely project completion.

Requirements

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with at least 5 years of industrial experience in API or fine chemical industries, or an M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry with at least 10 years of relevant industrial experience.
• Hands-on experience in laboratory-based process development, route assessment, optimization, scale-up, characterization, or troubleshooting for APIs, fine chemicals, NCEs, or related molecules.
• Strong knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, analytical techniques, reaction monitoring, process optimization, and practical route selection.
• Ability to conduct literature reviews, assess synthetic routes and raw materials, and develop technically feasible experimental or implementation plans.
• Experience delivering technical work within defined scope, quality requirements, timelines, budgets, and documentation standards.
• Ability to lead matrixed teams, influence without direct authority, and communicate through technical reports, protocols, SOPs, and presentations.

Nice to have

• Experience with donor-funded, government-funded, or internally funded technical programs.
• Background in pharmaceutical manufacturing, API process development, route scouting, technology transfer, CMC, quality, GMP manufacturing, or advanced manufacturing.
• Exposure to flow chemistry, process analytical technologies, continuous manufacturing, catalysis, biocatalysis, green chemistry, data science, cheminformatics, or technoeconomic analysis.
• Experience with technical due diligence, supplier assessments, risk-based evaluations, publications, patents, or scientific reports.
