Senior Data Scientist (NLP + Applied AI)

Salary: £44,200–£63,400 per year

What you will do

• Design and build production NLP enrichment pipelines for millions of scientific articles.
• Extract entities, classifications, claims, and summaries for downstream agentic applications.
• Compare classical NLP, retrieval, embedding, prompting, and fine-tuned model approaches.
• Build golden evaluation sets, select metrics, and balance quality, speed, cost, and operational performance.
• Contribute to tool-using agentic AI systems that reason over enriched scientific content.
• Work with editors, product managers, engineers, subject-matter experts, and vendors to turn modeling needs into product improvements.

Requirements

• Strong experience with modern NLP, including LLMs, transformers, embeddings, and retrieval.
• Experience with classical NLP approaches such as NER, classification, and sequence labeling.
• Ability to design evaluations and use results to guide modeling decisions.
• Strong Python skills across exploratory notebooks and production repositories.
• Ability to compare approaches and justify choices using evaluation results and cost estimates.

Nice to have

• Experience with scientific or scholarly text.
• Familiarity with AWS services including S3, Batch, Lambda, and SageMaker.
• Experience with Parquet or Iceberg data lake patterns.
• Experience operating LLMs within production cost and latency budgets.
• Exposure to agentic AI, tool use, multi-step reasoning, guardrails, and trajectory evaluation.
