Scientific Engineer (Structural Engineering)

What you will do

• Lead the numerical modelling workstream for applied research on the seismic performance and design of reinforced and precast concrete buildings.
• Translate research objectives into analysis plans, work packages, milestones, review points, and technical deliverables.
• Coordinate modelling activities by students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff; review models, code, analyses, and documentation.
• Provide technical guidance in structural analysis, earthquake engineering, OpenSees, model calibration, nonlinear response interpretation, and research documentation.
• Synthesize and disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations, design guidance, and reusable computational tools.
• Support research funding proposals, external partnerships, digital communications, and knowledge-mobilization materials.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Applied Science and at least one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Professional or applied research experience in structural engineering, earthquake engineering, or computational mechanics, including independent delivery of technically complex numerical work.
• Expertise in nonlinear modelling and performance-based seismic analysis of reinforced concrete and precast concrete structures, including shear wall and core wall systems.
• Advanced OpenSees and OpenSeesPy skills, strong Python programming ability, and experience developing reusable, documented, version-controlled computational workflows.
• Experience with nonlinear static and dynamic analysis, ground-motion selection and scaling, model calibration and validation, sensitivity studies, parametric studies, and large analysis datasets.
• Knowledge of Canadian seismic design practice, CSA A23.3, NBCC provisions, and relevant concrete building codes and standards.

Nice to have

• Registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC as a P.Eng., or progress toward registration.
• Research-based graduate degree in civil, structural, or earthquake engineering.
• Experience leading technical workstreams, coordinating engineers or researchers, mentoring research personnel, and publishing numerical research in peer-reviewed journals.
