Research Engineer (AI)

Location: Must be based in or willing to relocate to San Francisco, USA

What you will do

• Define the strategic direction of AI capability and risk assessment over the next 3-5 years.
• Design and build research code and experiment pipelines to test model behavior and security.
• Implement and adapt ML papers to address open-ended research questions.
• Publish research and contribute to public programs to influence the AI industry.
• Collaborate directly with founders to build out new research functions.

Requirements

• Strong background in ML, CS, or an adjacent quantitative field.
• Ability to independently design, build, debug, and maintain research code.
• Experience reading and quickly implementing ML papers.
• Familiarity with model training pipelines, fine-tuning, or probing.
• Must be able to work on-site in San Francisco; visa sponsorship and relocation stipend available.

Nice to have

• Experience in frontier labs, evaluation organizations, or security research.
• Published work such as first-author papers or adopted benchmarks.
• Ability to bridge the gap between high-level strategy and hands-on engineering.
