Staff Instrumentation & Controls Engineer (Capital Projects)

Location: Onsite in Alameda, California, with up to 25% travel to vendor facilities and the manufacturing facility in Moses Lake, Washington during construction, testing, and commissioning.

Salary: $151,000–$191,000 annual base pay.

What you will do

• Select, size, and specify flow, pressure, temperature, level, analytical, and control and shutoff valve instrumentation.
• Lead I&C design reviews through front-end loading and detailed engineering with process teams, control teams, vendors, and external engineering partners.
• Create and maintain instrument indexes, I/O lists, data sheets, P&IDs, loop diagrams, connection details, control panel drawings, alarm and trip lists, and cause-and-effect matrices.
• Specify SIL-rated instrumentation for Safety Instrumented Systems.
• Provide technical leadership during construction, including instrument receiving, installation oversight, loop checks, calibration, FAT/SAT, and plant startup.
• Integrate field instrumentation into PLC architectures, SCADA networks, and safety interlocks with automation and process engineers.

Requirements

• B.S. in Electrical, Instrumentation, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering with a Mechatronics concentration, or a related engineering field, plus 5+ years of capital project experience in related process industries.
• Knowledge of measurement principles, signal protocols, loop design, and valve sizing software.
• Experience specifying, procuring, and installing instrumentation for combustible dust, toxic or flammable gas, and high-temperature environments.
• Experience taking greenfield industrial capital projects from concept design through construction and site checkout.
• Ability to drive cross-functional technical decisions and align diverse stakeholders in fast-paced, ambiguous settings.
• Ability to work onsite in Alameda and travel up to 25% to vendor and manufacturing facilities. Must pass a respirator fit test, wear required PPE, and work in industrial environments involving stairs, narrow spaces, extended walking, and prolonged standing.

Nice to have

• Experience with instrumentation for bulk solids, powders, and granular materials, including loss-in-weight feeders, load cells, solids level measurement, and pneumatic conveying monitoring.
• Understanding of IEC, UL, and NFPA instrumentation standards.
• Familiarity with LOPA, SIL verification, and Safety Instrumented Systems hardware.
• Experience establishing instrumentation standards, design guidelines, and engineering best practices.
• Experience mentoring and providing technical direction to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
