TL;DR
Systems & Simulation Engineering Intern - Robotics R&D (Medical Robotics): Developing and testing robotic surgical systems through systems engineering, architectural modeling, and simulation-based analysis with an accent on system behavior, requirements development, verification, and performance characterization. Focus on analyzing simulation and test data, evaluating design tradeoffs, correlating models with laboratory results, and creating automation tools for robotic surgery engineering workflows.

Location: Hybrid role based in Santa Clara, California, United States. Must have and maintain United States work authorization during employment.

Salary: $32–$61 per hour, depending on academic level.

Company

Johnson & Johnson MedTech develops innovative medical technologies and robotic surgical solutions designed to improve surgical outcomes and patient care.

What you will do

  • Develop and execute system-level and subsystem-level simulations for robotic surgical platforms.
  • Model complex system behavior and evaluate design performance with multidisciplinary systems, mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineering teams.
  • Analyze simulation and test data to characterize performance, identify trends, and recommend engineering decisions.
  • Support requirements development, traceability, verification planning, system architecture studies, tradeoff analyses, and interface definition.
  • Correlate simulation results with laboratory experiments and contribute to system testing.
  • Create technical documentation, engineering reports, scripts, and automation workflows that improve analysis and simulation efficiency.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree as a junior or senior in systems engineering, robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or a related technical field.
  • Must plan to return to an academic program after the internship.
  • Understanding of engineering principles such as dynamics, controls, robotics, mechanics, or system modeling.
  • Experience with engineering analysis, simulation, computational tools, and technical data analysis through coursework, research, design teams, or internships.
  • Availability for full-time work of 40 hours per week during agreed working hours, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Available for the June 1–August 20, 2027, or June 21–September 10, 2027 internship term and authorized to work in the United States.

Nice to have

  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, ANSYS, Abaqus, Simscape, Gazebo, or similar simulation and modeling platforms.
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis, multibody dynamics, controls simulation, or system performance modeling.
  • Programming experience in Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar languages, including automation of data analysis, simulation, or testing workflows.
  • Exposure to requirements traceability, interface management, risk analysis, verification and validation, MBSE, SysML, JAMA, or DOORS.
  • Experience with robotics, autonomous systems, medical devices, complex electromechanical systems, or AI tools and platforms.

Culture & Benefits

  • Contribute to projects focused on surgical outcomes and patient safety.
  • Gain exposure to robotics, AI/ML, system integration, and clinical workflows.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and clinical teams.
  • Receive mentorship and professional development opportunities in an inclusive and innovative environment.
  • Eligible interns may participate in company-sponsored medical benefits, sick time, and the consolidated retirement plan, subject to plan terms.
