Staff Machine Learning Engineer - Search Ranking (AI)

Base salary: $152,000–$277,000 per year

What you will do

• Design features and large-scale machine learning models for relevance, ranking, personalization, and engagement.
• Build ML systems for search ranking, semantic retrieval, query understanding, and personalized product discovery.
• Develop real-time serving systems using transformer-based models, contrastive learning, vector search, LLMs, embeddings, and multimodal learning.
• Build and optimize reproducible ML pipelines with Apache Spark, Airflow, Kubeflow, and MLflow.
• Define performance metrics, evaluate model impact, and identify opportunities to improve search and discovery.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and data science teams while mentoring engineering talent.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
• At least 4 years of professional experience in applied machine learning.
• Experience with machine learning, deep learning, statistical modeling, and production-grade ML systems.
• Proficiency in Python and/or Java.
• Experience with search systems, information retrieval, recommendation engines, LLMs, embeddings, vector search, or modern ML frameworks is preferred.
• Ability to lead cross-functional work, communicate complex technical concepts, and operate independently in ambiguous environments.

Nice to have

• Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical field.
• Experience with AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Vertex AI, BigQuery, or SageMaker.
• Experience in startup or high-growth environments and multicultural organizations.
• Hands-on experience with TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Keras, XGBoost, LightGBM, H2O.ai, MLflow, Kubeflow, or Weights & Biases.
