Student Engineering Intern - Rock Mechanics (Mining Engineering)

Location: Rapid City, South Dakota, USA. The internship requires 40 hours per week onsite during the summer, with an option to work an average of 10–20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

What you will do

• Perform numerical analysis of underground structures, engineering support, and data analysis.
• Design and assess ground support systems.
• Conduct conventional geotechnical analyses and contribute to mine planning.
• Compile technical background information, modeling results, and study findings.
• Prepare oral presentations and written technical deliverables.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and gain exposure to clients, project sites, and local communities.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or advanced degree in geological, mechanical, mining, civil engineering, or a related field.
• Strong computer skills and experience with Python or another data analysis programming language.
• Working knowledge of fundamental engineering concepts.
• Willingness to learn, tackle challenging technical problems, and receive coaching.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Nice to have

• Exposure to finite element or finite difference analysis and numerical modeling methods.
• Strong time management, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Ability to produce accurate, high-quality work efficiently.
