Chapter Lead Engineer (Java)

The role supports Bank Mendes Gans (BMG), ING’s specialized wholesale banking subsidiary focused on cash management, liquidity management, and transaction banking solutions.

What you will do

• Lead end-to-end engineering delivery for Agile DevOps squads, including roadmaps, milestones, dependencies, risks, and technical debt.
• Own services throughout their lifecycle, from development to production operations, including monitoring, incident investigation, root-cause analysis, on-call support, and resilience improvements.
• Define and promote engineering standards covering architecture, security, compliance, CI/CD, test automation, observability, and design for failure.
• Coach engineers on solution design, reliability, scalability, maintainability, and architectural decision-making.
• Lead responsible adoption of AI-assisted engineering, automation, self-service capabilities, and AI governance controls.
• Manage and develop a chapter of 8–15 engineers across backend, frontend, databases, business analysis, and testing.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with JVM languages and related technologies, plus 2+ years of people management experience.
• Hands-on expertise with Java 21, Spring Boot 4.x, Spring Framework, JPA/Hibernate, REST or gRPC APIs, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, accessibility, security, and a UI framework such as Lit-HTML, Angular, React, Vue, or Svelte.
• Experience with enterprise integration patterns, JMS, Kafka, relational databases such as MS SQL Server or Oracle, and data-intensive operations.
• Knowledge of Azure DevOps, Git, Maven, Confluence, CI/CD pipelines, JUnit, Mockito, BDD testing, Playwright, Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, communication protocols, DDD, and architecture patterns.
• Advanced English is required, together with strong stakeholder management, communication, analytical, and decision-making skills.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Cybernetics, Software Engineering, Financial Engineering, or an equivalent analytical discipline.

Nice to have

• Performance testing with JMeter or Gatling and experience with application profiling, monitoring, and alerting.
• Elastic Stack knowledge, IT security experience, or familiarity with Kotlin and other JVM languages.
