Commercial Accountant (VFX)

Location: Auckland, New Zealand; hybrid with a minimum of three days in the office each week

Company

Independent New Zealand VFX studio producing visual effects for major film and television productions.

What you will do

• Manage monthly payroll end to end through Smartly, including contractor payments and compliance.
• Prepare and report a 90-day rolling cashflow forecast in Xero to the leadership team each week.
• Coordinate weekly revenue roll calls with the Production team and prepare monthly management accounts.
• Handle accounts payable, client and supplier invoicing, bank reconciliations, and credit card reconciliations.
• Coordinate the annual R&D tax credit claim and maintain relationships with external accountants.
• Manage contractor onboarding, compliance, and scheduled payments.

Requirements

• 5+ years of accounting or commercial finance experience.
• End-to-end payroll experience, including New Zealand and ideally Australian contractor compliance.
• Proficiency with Xero and Smartly.
• Strong Excel skills and knowledge of New Zealand bookkeeping, GST, and employment compliance.
• Understanding of revenue recognition, including percentage-completion accounting.
• Experience in a fast-paced, adaptable, project-based, or creative environment is valuable.
