Staff AI Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, United States; on-site

Compensation: $280,000–$400,000 per year plus equity

What you will do

• Build and ship production AI agents that automate financial workflows and help customers use their accounting data.
• Shape agent architecture, including tool calling, orchestration, retrieval, and application-data integrations.
• Own agent quality in production through evaluations, tracing, monitoring, and systematic debugging.
• Design reliable approaches to permissions, data access, human approvals, and recovery from partial failures.
• Make architectural decisions, lead complex initiatives, mentor engineers, and raise engineering standards while remaining hands-on.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, and design to turn ambiguous problems into trusted customer-facing software.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering background with substantial experience building and operating production backend systems.
• Maintainable Python code and sound judgment across APIs, data models, distributed systems, and testing.
• Hands-on experience shipping LLM-powered agents used by real customers, beyond demos and prototypes.
• Experience balancing accuracy, latency, cost, and complexity when choosing between agents and deterministic workflows.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience and a track record of owning consequential production systems.
• Experience leading complex initiatives, communicating technical decisions, mentoring engineers, and staying close to the code.

• Prior fintech or accounting experience.
