Manager, Upstream Process Development and Scale-up (Biotechnology)

Location: Marlborough, Massachusetts, United States. The role involves laboratory and pilot-scale work, including BSL-2 laboratories, domestic and international travel, and occasional off-hours support for critical project milestones.

Salary: $126,000–$150,000 per year, plus eligibility for bonus or incentive pay.

What you will do

• Lead upstream process development, scale-up, technology transfer, and customer support projects for biologics, viral vectors, plasmid DNA, mRNA, and advanced therapy modalities.
• Provide scientific and technical oversight for cell culture bioreactor operations, process characterization, scale-up, investigations, risk assessments, and troubleshooting.
• Act as a customer-facing subject matter expert during meetings, project reviews, technical presentations, and training activities.
• Develop service offerings, workflows, technical proposals, study plans, SOPs, batch records, technical reports, and transfer documentation.
• Partner with downstream, analytics, applications, automation, R&D, commercial, and PMO functions to deliver projects and meet customer objectives.
• Lead workforce planning, recruitment, talent development, resource allocation, delivery performance, and continuous improvement using hirify.global Business System principles.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in chemical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline; an MS or PhD is preferred.
• 10+ years of relevant biologics experience, including 2+ years leading technical teams or managing people.
• Hands-on expertise in upstream process development, scale-up, technology transfer, and mammalian cell culture from laboratory to pilot scale.
• Experience managing customer-facing projects and cross-functional teams, with strong technical writing and presentation skills.
• Ability and willingness to work in laboratory and pilot-scale environments, including BSL-2 laboratories when required.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally and support occasional off-hours activities during critical project milestones.
