Senior Firmware Engineer (Embedded C/STM32)

Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom; based at the hirify.global Campus, approximately 10 miles south of Cambridge. The role involves hands-on work with hardware, motors, sensors, and laboratory automation systems.

What you will do

• Own firmware development from requirements and architecture through implementation, verification, and production support.
• Write and review robust, maintainable, and testable C firmware for ARM microcontrollers, primarily STM32.
• Design automated unit, integration, and hardware-in-the-loop tests and integrate them into continuous integration workflows.
• Translate system needs into firmware requirements and interfaces while working with electronics, mechanical, automation, software, and biology specialists.
• Debug complex embedded systems using debug probes, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analysers.
• Develop supporting tools and simple interfaces using Python, C#, or Java, and contribute to custom test equipment.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience designing and delivering embedded systems with independent technical ownership.
• Extensive experience developing firmware in C and/or C++ for ARM microcontrollers, ideally STM32.
• Strong experience creating and maintaining automated embedded-system tests within continuous integration workflows.
• Ability to debug systems at both code and signal level while working directly with hardware.
• Ability to interpret component datasheets and electronics schematics for design and debugging.
• Collaborative approach with the ability to explain technical trade-offs and work across multiple engineering disciplines.

Nice to have

• Experience with electronics design, hard real-time motion-control or safety-critical algorithms, Docker, embedded Linux, or interfaces between embedded Linux and microcontroller firmware.
