Backend Engineer (Node.js)

Location: Remote from Cyprus; CET hours preferred

Salary: €5,600–€6,500 gross per month

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services with Node.js and TypeScript.
• Develop product features from concept through deployment in collaboration with product managers and frontend engineers.
• Own backend architecture decisions focused on performance, reliability, security, and clean design.
• Build and scale distributed systems supporting high-volume donations, event streaming, background processing, analytics, and search.
• Write unit tests, conduct code reviews, refactor legacy code, and implement system improvements.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to engineering standards and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend development experience, preferably in a product-driven environment.
• Strong hands-on experience with Node.js and Koa or NestJS, plus deep TypeScript expertise.
• Solid experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases.
• Experience with event-driven or distributed architectures using Kafka, RabbitMQ, or Bull/Redis.
• Experience with ClickHouse or similar analytics databases and Elasticsearch.
• Comfortable working within a Russian-speaking team. Strong ownership, independent execution, system design knowledge, and performance optimization skills are required.

Nice to have

• Experience working in a remote-first, globally distributed team.
• Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar observability tools.
• Interest in nonprofit technology and a hypothesis-driven approach.
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
