Lead AI Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid role based in Baltimore, Maryland or New York City, with up to three days per week from home

Base salary: $145,000–$247,000 for Maryland and $181,000–$309,000 for New York

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, development, deployment, and evolution of production-grade AI agents and intelligent systems.
• Set technical direction across models, orchestration, retrieval, tools, data, infrastructure, latency, cost, security, reliability, and maintainability.
• Guide teams through ambiguous AI challenges from experimentation and architecture to production adoption and scale.
• Define standards for AI evaluation, testing, observability, guardrails, failure handling, security, and responsible deployment.
• Build reusable capabilities for agent orchestration, tool use, retrieval systems, evaluation frameworks, observability, and guardrails.
• Mentor engineers, lead design and code reviews, and transition incubated AI products to business-aligned technology teams through the Build-Operate-Transfer model.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience, with 8+ years of progressive software engineering experience.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript and technical delivery across teams or major initiatives.
• Deep experience designing and delivering production or near-production AI-enabled systems, intelligent workflows, or agentic applications.
• Expertise in agent orchestration, tool or function calling, retrieval-based systems, prompt and context engineering, evaluation, observability, guardrails, and failure handling.
• Experience with AWS or equivalent cloud-native solutions, containerized microservices, APIs, automated testing, code reviews, security, and continuous delivery.
• Strong architecture, system-design, communication, influence, mentoring, and problem-solving skills; FINRA licenses are not required and will not be supported.

• Experience establishing engineering standards or technical direction across multiple teams.
