TL;DR
V&V Intern (Robotics) (Autonomous Construction Equipment): Developing black-box tests and actuator models for autonomous heavy construction equipment with an accent on hardware instrumentation, system identification, and sim-to-real validation. Focus on characterizing latency, deadband, hysteresis, and saturation across changing machine conditions, then automating test execution and converting measurements into simulation and controls improvements.

Location: San Francisco, CA, United States; hybrid. The role includes hands-on work on machines in the field while wearing PPE.

What you will do

  • Develop and execute black-box test plans for hardware actuators on machines and test stands.
  • Instrument hardware, configure data acquisition systems, and collect reliable datasets.
  • Characterize actuator latency, deadband, hysteresis, and saturation across temperature, load, and wear conditions.
  • Compare real machine data with simulation output and quantify sim-to-real discrepancies.
  • Provide findings to controls and simulation teams as concrete model improvements.
  • Automate test execution and reporting.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, computer science, electrical, aerospace, or robotics engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Working understanding of controls or system identification fundamentals.
  • Experience using Python for analysis and automation.
  • Hands-on experience with sensors, data acquisition, or test benches.
  • Willingness to spend substantial time working on machines in the field while wearing PPE.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to hydraulics or heavy equipment.
  • Experience with a robotics simulator such as Isaac, MuJoCo, or Gazebo.
  • Familiarity with ROS or comparable robotics middleware.
