Staff Software Engineer (Payments)

Location: hirify.global operates across office and remote locations; this role requires collaboration across multiple time zones and may require work outside normal business hours.

What you will do

• Serve as a technical expert on global card networks, specifications, protocols, certification requirements, mandates, and production behavior.
• Build and operate card-issuing capabilities covering issuance, fulfillment, activation, authorization, processing, digital wallets, 3-D Secure, clearing, settlement, and disputes.
• Lead complex engineering problems at the boundary between card networks and hirify.global's issuing platform.
• Write production code, analyze network messages at the protocol and field level, and build certification and conformance tooling.
• Drive network certification and mandatory release cycles while establishing reusable standards, frameworks, and practices.
• Support technical growth through design guidance, code reviews, mentorship, documentation, on-call participation, and incident response.

Requirements

• Deep current expertise with at least one major card network, ideally Visa, including direct connectivity, ISO 8583, authorization and clearing flows, stand-in processing, specifications, certification, and mandate cycles.
• Experience personally building, certifying, or operating a live direct network connection rather than integrating only through a processor.
• Experience working directly with card networks to secure rulings, exceptions, extensions, configuration changes, defect fixes, or certification outcomes.
• Strong hands-on software engineering experience with highly reliable financial or payments systems at scale.
• Experience leading technically complex, ambiguous, cross-team work and creating frameworks, standards, tooling, architecture, or practices adopted by other teams.
• Working knowledge of Mastercard and American Express, fluency with AI-assisted engineering workflows, and willingness to participate in an on-call rotation.

Nice to have

• Deep expertise in Visa or another major global card network.
• Experience across additional card lifecycle areas such as ledgering, reconciliation, fraud, provisioning, or activation.
