Director of Media Relations (Agriculture)

Location: Fully remote, with AFT headquarters in Washington, DC; occasional domestic travel and occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Salary: $120,000–$130,000 per year, based on experience.

What you will do

• Develop and implement the media relations strategy and related policies and procedures.
• Build relationships with media contacts, particularly agriculture reporters, and serve as the primary media liaison.
• Coordinate projects, deadlines, external partners, and cross-divisional teams to deliver communications outcomes.
• Develop press materials, op-eds, opinion pieces, talking points, FAQs, and briefing materials.
• Secure media coverage for AFT research, programs, projects, events, and organizational priorities.
• Support the president, CEO, and other spokespeople during interviews and media events.

Requirements

• 10+ years of progressively responsible media relations experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Advanced degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong knowledge of media relations principles, communications strategy, and public relations tools.
• Ability to respond professionally to time-sensitive media inquiries and translate complex technical or academic topics into concise communications.
• Proficiency with Meltwater and other relevant communications tools.
• Interest in agriculture, conservation, and related policy issues, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders and media contacts.
