Director - Forecasting (Energy)

Location: China; hybrid workplace. The role begins with approximately two months at Octopus HQ before deployment in an East Asian market and requires openness to moving to the market.

What you will do

• Build forecasting and asset optimisation analytics for renewable energy markets.
• Research data feeds and manage contracts with meteorology providers.
• Develop generation forecasts for solar, wind, and hydro plants, along with system demand and interconnection forecasts.
• Combine volume forecasts into day-ahead and real-time price forecasts and replicate local real-time pricing formulas.
• Design a modular forecasting engine that adapts to provincial market rules, ancillary services, and price signals.
• Define the software strategy and technology stack, lead recruitment, use LLMs for development, and ensure compliance with local data security standards.

Requirements

• Experience building and leading high-performing data science and analytics teams.
• Experience with sophisticated machine learning techniques and complex data pipelines.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL; experience with data visualisation suites.
• Strong communication skills for explaining complex concepts clearly.
• Openness to moving to an East Asian market and working in a hybrid setup in China.
• English communication skills are required; Mandarin is advantageous but not essential.
