TL;DR
Design Release Engineer - Instrument Panel, Floor Console, and Deco Trim (Automotive Interiors): Designing, developing, analyzing, implementing, and validating instrument panel and console subsystems for global vehicle programs with an accent on packaging, manufacturing processes, CAE-driven performance, and cross-functional product development. Focus on leading complex interior engineering projects, balancing cost, mass, timing, and performance tradeoffs, and resolving design and launch issues across GM, suppliers, and vehicle systems.

Location: Hybrid in Warren, Michigan, with on-site work at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week. This role is not eligible for relocation assistance.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, analyze, implement, and validate instrument panel, floor console, and decorative trim subsystems.
  • Perform engineering design evaluations, concept development, component packaging, CAD development, peer reviews, and design-for-manufacturing assessments.
  • Apply DFMEA, PFMEA, ICDs, DFSS, DRBFM, FEA, and CAE analysis to improve system performance and reliability.
  • Balance cost, mass, complexity, timing, customer requirements, and vehicle content across global vehicle programs.
  • Lead cross-functional product development teams and collaborate with Creative Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers, and vehicle system teams.
  • Support vehicle launches, resolve open issues, mentor engineers, and capture lessons learned and best practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams and coaching other design release engineers.
  • Ability to lead complex projects, estimate timelines, allocate resources, and work effectively in ambiguous environments.
  • Design for Six Sigma Greenbelt certification required within one year of hire and Blackbelt certification within two years.
  • Preferred experience includes 10+ years in automotive engineering, interior component development, manufacturing processes, CAE, material sciences, and engineering tools.
  • Immigration sponsorship is not provided; candidates must not require GM sponsorship or immigration-related work authorization support now or in the future.

Nice to have

  • Experience with injection molding, skin forming, wrapping, vacuum forming, foam-in-place, and vibration welding.
  • Experience with Math Data Viewing and Analysis, Engineering Change Release, GD&T, SORs, change orders, and vehicle component packaging.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate tradeoffs with cross-functional partners and suppliers.
