Staff Software Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: Hybrid in Sunnyvale, California; attendance at a specific location at least 3 times per week. Travel under 25%.

Salary: $189,300–$290,000 annual base compensation, plus potential incentive pay.

What you will do

• Define the technical strategy, architecture, and roadmap for autonomous vehicle hardware-in-the-loop software platforms.
• Design scalable, reliable, observable, and hardware-aware validation capabilities supporting development through deployment.
• Establish standards for platform services, APIs, service reliability, test automation, CI/CD, and operational excellence.
• Address complex technical problems spanning AV software, AI models, vehicle hardware, infrastructure, middleware, operating systems, and deployment pipelines.
• Lead critical software designs and implementations while improving scalability, utilization, fidelity, developer productivity, and cost efficiency.
• Mentor engineers and influence architecture and technical planning across the autonomous vehicle organization.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience designing, developing, and delivering production-quality software systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Expert software engineering and systems fundamentals with strong coding ability in Python, C++, or comparable languages.
• Experience with complex distributed hardware-software systems, scalability, performance, reliability, observability, and operational excellence.
• Experience developing and operating software in Linux and with platform architecture, APIs, automation, CI/CD, test infrastructure, and production operations.
• Strong communication, technical leadership, cross-team collaboration, and decision-making skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with hardware-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, simulation, validation, or large-scale test platforms.
• Experience with performance profiling, resource management, latency analysis, and capacity planning on dedicated hardware.
• Experience with ROS, robotics architectures, autonomous vehicle or embedded systems, and safety-critical or real-time systems.
• Experience delivering platform-as-a-service capabilities, Bazel, SQL, test analytics, or platform observability.
