Mechanical Design Engineer (Manufacturing Automation)

Location: United States. The role includes 10–20% travel across Flex-Tek sites and hands-on work on shop floors, in labs, and around equipment builds.

What you will do

• Design tooling, fixtures, guards, robot stands, material-handling devices, and custom machine components.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, drawings, layouts, configurable files, and CAM-ready details using software such as SolidWorks.
• Develop prototypes, test rigs, equipment mockups, and automation solutions; support fabrication, installation, startup, validation, and production handoff.
• Integrate mechanical designs with controls and electrical systems, including sensors, pneumatics, cable routing, robot tooling, guarding, operator stations, and service clearances.
• Lead prototype and equipment testing, document results, support troubleshooting, and recommend design or process improvements.
• Coordinate with production teams, site leaders, suppliers, fabrication partners, and controls engineers to deliver reliable and maintainable equipment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
• At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design, manufacturing equipment, custom tooling, fixtures, automation support, or machine design.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, including assemblies, drawings, configurations, and revision control.
• Practical knowledge of machining, welding, sheet metal, fabrication, 3D printing, assembly, and purchased component selection.
• Experience with mechanical systems involving pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion, conveyors, guarding, robotics support structures, or test equipment.
• Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, mechanical drafting standards, automation components, and hands-on shop-floor problem solving.

Nice to have

• Experience with machine safety, guarding design, ergonomic access, equipment serviceability, and robot integration support.
• Exposure to rapid prototyping, 3D printing, test rigs, fixture trials, and shop-floor validation.
• Experience coordinating automation component vendors and supporting robot or automated equipment layouts.
• Ability to adapt designs across different products, processes, equipment types, and site constraints.
