TL;DR
Mechanical Design Engineer (Automation) (manufacturing automation): Developing prototypes, machines, tooling, fixtures, and custom mechanical components for manufacturing operations with an accent on CAD modeling, shop-floor validation, and controls integration. Focus on designing reliable automated equipment, testing and troubleshooting prototypes, and coordinating suppliers, fabrication, installation, and production handoff.

Location: United States. Travel: 10–20%.

What you will do

  • Design tooling, fixtures, guards, robot stands, material-handling devices, and custom machine components for manufacturing applications.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, drawings, layouts, configurable design files, BOMs, and CAM-ready details using tools such as SolidWorks.
  • Develop prototypes, test rigs, equipment mockups, and automation concepts; support fabrication, installation, startup, troubleshooting, validation, and production handoff.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with sensors, pneumatics, electrical enclosures, HMIs, robot tooling, guarding, operator stations, and service clearances.
  • Lead prototype and equipment testing, document results, and recommend design or process improvements.
  • Coordinate with production teams, site leaders, suppliers, fabrication partners, controls engineers, and electrical engineers across Flex-Tek sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design, manufacturing equipment, custom tooling, fixtures, automation support, or machine design.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks, including assemblies, drawings, configurations, and revision control.
  • Strong understanding of machining, welding, sheet metal, fabrication, 3D printing, assembly, and purchased component selection.
  • Experience with mechanical systems such as pneumatics, hydraulics, linear motion, conveyors, guarding, robotics support structures, or test equipment.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, tolerance stack-up, mechanical drafting standards, automation components, and cross-functional design coordination.

Nice to have

  • Experience with machine safety, guarding design, ergonomic access, equipment serviceability, and robot integration support.
  • Exposure to rapid prototyping, 3D printing, test rigs, fixture trials, and shop-floor validation.
  • Experience supporting automated equipment layouts, robot reach studies, part presentation, operator access, and maintainability.
  • Experience coordinating vendors for robot accessories, grippers, encoders, sensors, pneumatics, framing systems, and electrical enclosure hardware.
