Intermediate Backend Engineer, AMER

Location: Remote in Canada or the United States

Salary: $115,200–$194,400 USD per year for United States residents

What you will do

• Design, implement, test, ship, and follow up on backend features and improvements with minimal guidance.
• Build secure, maintainable, observable, and performant APIs, background jobs, integrations, and bounded services.
• Work with data models, migrations, indexes, query behavior, and backend performance.
• Improve automated unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end test coverage and review code for quality, security, and operational risk.
• Investigate build, deployment, test, and runtime failures, identify technical debt, and participate in on-call or operational support when required.
• Use AI coding tools productively, validate generated output, and account for its limitations.

Requirements

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications.
• Strong programming, API, database, testing, debugging, and performance fundamentals.
• Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or another modern backend language, with the ability to learn and adapt.
• Ability to own features from clarification through delivery and follow-up while working independently.
• Sound judgment regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, operational risk, and backend boundaries.
• Strong written communication, remote asynchronous collaboration skills, and practical experience with AI coding tools.

Nice to have

• Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC experience.
• Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployment experience.
• Rust experience, particularly for systems, security, performance, or platform work.
• PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven workflow experience.
• Observability and experience with modular monoliths, bounded contexts, shared components, or independently operated services.
