Engineering Manager (Java)

Location: Remote, hybrid, or onsite from the Santa Barbara office; employees must reside in California, Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Colorado, Georgia, New York, Massachusetts, or Connecticut and be eligible to work in the United States.

Salary: $190,000–$220,000 per year plus benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the team's technical vision, roadmap, design reviews, and technical risk management for a payments platform.
• Run Scrum ceremonies and protect sprint scope to make delivery predictable.
• Partner with Product to scope, phase, size, and prioritize initiatives.
• Set quality standards for testing, code review, documentation, and definition of done.
• Ship production Java, write design documents, and review frontend changes in HTML, JavaScript, and Angular.
• Own production services, including monitoring, alerting, deployments, incident response, PCI DSS, and security requirements.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with hands-on ownership of production systems.
• 3+ years at Senior Engineer level or above and 3+ years of engineering management experience leading a team of at least four engineers.
• 5+ years of Java experience with web frameworks, including production Java work within the last 12 months.
• 2+ years running Scrum ceremonies as Scrum Master or the accountable equivalent.
• Experience with hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, coaching, and employee development.
• Must reside in one of the specified US states and verify eligibility to work in the United States.

Nice to have

• Production Linux experience, ideally Ubuntu.
• Payments, B2B SaaS, PCI DSS, or another regulated engineering environment experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent senior-level engineering experience.
