TL;DR
Scientist in Synthetic Biology (Mammalian Gene Circuits and Brain-Computer Interfaces): Designing and optimizing genetic payloads and expression-control systems for high-bandwidth brain-computer interfaces with an accent on mammalian gene circuits, multigene architectures, and quantitative validation. Focus on building high-throughput construct-testing workflows, engineering cellular compatibility, and advancing lead payloads from neuronal models to in vivo animal studies.

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, United States; on-site

What you will do

  • Design mammalian genetic circuits and multigene payload architectures controlling stoichiometry, expression level, timing, cell-type specificity, and cellular burden.
  • Build and characterize synthetic constructs at high throughput using modular regulatory-element libraries.
  • Develop compact expression-control systems, including inducible switches, dual-vector logic, feedback circuits, and microRNA-based regulation.
  • Engineer host-cell compatibility by addressing protein trafficking, proteostasis, metabolic burden, cellular stress, immune sensing, and transgene silencing.
  • Translate expression requirements into payloads compatible with viral and non-viral delivery technologies.
  • Characterize expression and function in mammalian cells and neurons, then evaluate lead payloads in animal models with in vivo scientists.

Requirements

  • PhD in Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field, or equivalent experience leading research projects end to end.
  • Strong experience designing and experimentally validating mammalian gene circuits or tunable expression systems.
  • Proficiency in molecular cloning, library construction, mammalian cell expression, and quantitative characterization.
  • Experience with methods such as flow cytometry, qPCR, sequencing, imaging, or functional assays.
  • Experience establishing systematic or high-throughput construct-testing workflows.
  • Ability to independently define research strategies, troubleshoot experiments, interpret data, and collaborate across disciplines.

Nice to have

  • Experience with neuronal, iPSC-derived, or primary-cell models and in vivo translation.
  • Experience designing payloads for viral or non-viral delivery technologies.
  • Expertise in RNA regulation, aptazymes, microRNA-based control, UTR and mRNA-stability engineering, intracellular immune sensing, transgene silencing, or cell-type-specific expression.
  • Experience engineering multicomponent protein systems or modeling circuit behavior and expression dynamics.
