Publisher - Medicine & Health Journals (12 Month Fixed Term Maternity Cover) (Academic Publishing/Oncology): Managing and developing a portfolio of oncology journals with an accent on strategic growth, publishing quality, financial performance, and relationships with editors and academic societies. Focus on building journal development plans, acquiring content, analyzing market and competitor activity, and optimizing publishing operations.

Location: Hybrid working in the UK, with a requirement to live within commuting distance of either the London Blackfriars or Milton Park office and work in person three days per week or more. Applicants must have the right to work and live in the UK. Flexible hours are required to accommodate meetings with colleagues in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

What you will do

  • Create and deliver strategic development plans for an oncology journal portfolio, supporting quality, growth, profitability, revenue, and article-volume targets.
  • Manage journal P&Ls, financial reporting, market analysis, competitive intelligence, and portfolio performance.
  • Oversee the transition of acquired titles and commission or acquire new content with editors, editorial teams, and internal colleagues.
  • Build strategic partnerships with academic societies, journal editors, potential editors, and wider academic communities.
  • Represent the journals at conferences and editorial board meetings while championing portfolio initiatives with stakeholders.
  • Improve publishing processes, ensure policy compliance and publication quality, and collaborate across departments.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in scholarly publishing and knowledge of publishing best practices, policies, publication ethics, funder mandates, and industry trends.
  • Strong subject-matter expertise or interest in a relevant field, particularly oncology, medicine, or health.
  • Experience working with editors, editorial boards, academic societies, and other external partners.
  • Experience recruiting and engaging external academic editors.
  • Understanding of financial reporting and analysis for academic journals, including previous P&L responsibility.
  • Market analysis, competitive intelligence, communication, and presentation skills.
