Senior Manager, Data Engineering (AI)

Location: Washington, DC, United States

Salary: $179,000–$203,000 annually, paid bi-weekly.

What you will do

• Build and operate the company’s cloud data engineering platform from the ground up.
• Make technical decisions covering data models, tooling, pipelines, deployment, and engineering standards.
• Develop production data pipelines and turn them into reusable components, testing standards, and code review practices.
• Recruit, supervise, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers while owning delivery and technical quality.
• Implement data quality, automated testing, data contracts, lineage tracking, monitoring, access controls, PII handling, retention, and audit practices.
• Partner with business units to gather requirements, define technical specifications, and manage cloud infrastructure costs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 3 years of experience supervising data engineers and developing engineering staff.
• Experience designing, building, and operating production data platforms in a cloud environment.
• Experience with SQL and at least one general-purpose programming language, such as Python.
• Knowledge of distributed data processing, data modeling, and batch and streaming systems.
• Experience with infrastructure as code, version control, code review, automated testing, data quality, observability, and cloud cost management.

Nice to have

• Experience establishing data infrastructure where little or no prior capability existed.
• Experience with AWS data services, Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, dbt, Iceberg, Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation, GitHub Actions, Kafka, Flink, or Spark Structured Streaming.
• Experience with geospatial data or Palantir.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a decentralized organization.
