Staff Data Platform Engineer

What you will do

• Build reusable, opinionated infrastructure as code for cloud database provisioning and operations.
• Design, secure, maintain, monitor, back up, and optimize production databases and data stores.
• Define standards for data access, storage, schemas, migrations, access libraries, and database selection.
• Improve observability across applications and end-to-end data flows, including troubleshooting and operational visibility.
• Lead cross-team technical initiatives, reduce technical debt, and improve system quality, reliability, and cost efficiency.
• Mentor senior engineers, facilitate technical discussions, document decisions, and build alignment across engineering and partner teams.

Requirements

• Must be located in the United States.
• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep data specialization and production delivery across transactional and analytical systems.
• Expertise with NoSQL, relational, and columnar data stores, including MongoDB, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, and Snowflake.
• Strong SQL and NoSQL skills, including schema design, migrations, indexing, normalization, warehousing, and read/write performance optimization.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures, distributed systems, AWS, infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, and observability tooling.
• Experience with dbt, CDC and replication tools, Dagster or Airflow, streaming pipelines such as Flink, and time-series and geospatial data modeling.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with voter file data.
• Experience with or interest in political data.
• Background in political technology, civic technology, advocacy, or mission-driven organizations.
