Software Development Engineer (Distributed Systems)

Location: Pleasanton, California, USA; hybrid Flex Work with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or in the field

Annual base salary: $148,000–$222,000 USD for the primary location; additional US locations: $123,900–$222,000 USD

What you will do

• Build and scale distributed tracing features using ClickHouse and Grafana Tempo.
• Develop and support high-throughput data pipelines with Kafka, Spark or Flink, Apache Iceberg, and S3.
• Optimize code and resolve production latency and throughput issues.
• Implement error handling, retries, failover, monitoring, logging, and alerting for highly available services.
• Apply security controls for multi-tenant data access and support AI-driven anomaly detection and root-cause analysis.
• Contribute to system design reviews, technical documentation, and on-call operations.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software development experience and 3+ years designing, building, and operating complex distributed systems.
• 5+ years of production experience with at least two of Java, Python, and Go.
• Experience with distributed APIs, including gRPC, REST, and OpenTelemetry, plus scalable observability or telemetry pipelines.
• Knowledge of data partitioning, eventual consistency, fault tolerance, sharding, replication, query optimization, and high-availability strategies.
• Experience with testing, CI/CD automation, Git-based collaborative development, and securing distributed environments with mTLS, authorization, and encryption.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; a master’s degree is strongly preferred.
